Description:

This silent film, typical of its era, was a grand theatrical production with a unique orchestral score that was largely forgotten for decades. Restored by Carlo Piccardi using the surviving score by Maurice Jaubert, and shown in Paris in 1988, the film tells the story of a woman living as the mistress of a colonel in the Tsar's army. She falls deeply in love with a poor lieutenant, and he reciprocates her feelings. Despite her desire to stay with the colonel and his wish to avoid conflict, their relationship leads to tragedy. The title refers to a significant event in the story and translates to "the wonderful lie of Nina Petrovna."
