Twenty-five million Brazilians have Italian ancestry, most descended from Italians who emigrated from poor rural Italy at the end of the 19th century, seeking opportunity in Brazil. But within a century, migration patterns reversed. Italy, once a place of departure, has become a major world power and a sought-after destination for immigrants. The only constant is the hardship faced by those who must leave their homes to migrate.
