New Kimagure Orange Road: Summer’s Beginning (1996)

*Kimagure Orange Road* follows a teenage love triangle between Hikaru and Madoka, who were close friends until they both developed feelings for Kyosuke, a quiet young man with psychic abilities. In 1991, 19-year-old Kyosuke is in an accident and transported three years into the future. He struggles to adjust to the changes in his world. Madoka and Hikaru are now a successful songwriter and a drama and dance student, respectively. Meanwhile, older Kyosuke is working as a student photographer in Bosnia. The story uses the situation of two Kyosukes existing simultaneously for comedic effect, including a scene where the 22-year-old Kyosuke gives advice to his younger self. The film assumes viewers are familiar with the characters from the original anime series, though their designs have been updated. The result is a romantic fantasy in the style of *Pax*, rather than a science fiction story.
