OK, so anyone who knows anything at all about D-Day ought to already know the outcome of this quite tautly paced drama, but that lack of jeopardy doesn't impact too much on this tale about whether/weather or not the landings should go ahead on the day selected by Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) and Montgomery (Damian Lewis). The one thing they need to know in advance is the forecast and for that they draft in, upon Churchill's recommendation - chief meteorologist James Stagg (Andrew Scott). He arrives at their HQ to find the existing operation run by Col. Krick (Chris Messina) overly reliant on historical data and on that man's experiences predicting what was going to happen across the far more stable area of North Africa. Immediately, the two clash heads - especially when their respective prognostications differ wildly; put the generals at loggerheads and see tempers flare across the board. Just to add to his woes, Stagg discovers that his pregnant wife may have been injured in a bombing of the hospital in which she was giving birth. With conflicts going on all around him can stay focussed and will his predictions prevail? I thought Scott delivered quite convincingly here as a man who believed passionately in his own abilities but who wasn't devoid of humanity when push came to shove, either. Fraser added a surprising degree of gravitas with his Eisenhower and Kerry Condon's performance as the general's ADC proved quite a useful steam valve/intermediary between the often seemingly quite belligerent scientist and his equally dyed-in-the-wool bosses. On that latter front, I struggled a little with Lewis's interpretation of Montgomery. Indeed, cinema across the board always manages to present this man as a bit of a bullying prigg and here isn't really very different. Overall, this polished production illustrates just how much of a team effort the planning for the invasion in 1945 was and at how precarious the whole operation was with only hours to go and an enemy strengthening it's defences with every extra moment.
