Description:
As American forces advance toward Okinawa, an island south of Japan, the Imperial Japanese command commits its best generals and divisions to defend it. The defense quickly weakens as resources and troops are shifted elsewhere. After a disastrous civilian evacuation, most civilians are left on the island and many begin fighting. Tokyo's confusing orders waste time and supplies, like demanding an airstrip for planes that never arrive. It becomes clear that the Japanese high command has given up on holding Okinawa, abandoning its defenders. When the Americans land, troops are mispositioned, and a desperate, suicidal spirit takes hold. Okinawa transforms into a deadly trap for everyone, including civilians who volunteered to fight.
