Burning mirror (2001)

Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen were leading figures in China's avant-garde art scene during the late 20th century. *Burning Mirror* documents scenes from everyday life in Beijing, presented through mirrored plastic. The images distort, then darken and disappear as the reflective material is set on fire, transforming into flames. Bystanders appear largely indifferent to the dramatic display. Song Dong frequently uses fire and mirrors to explore themes of reflection, destruction, and renewal, creating powerful yet subtle performances using ordinary objects and locations.
