Description:
In the 1950s and 1960s, the waters surrounding Minamata, Japan, became severely polluted with mercury from a Chisso Corporation chemical plant. This toxic substance built up in seafood from the Yatsushiro Sea. Consequently, people who ate the local fish and shellfish developed Minamata disease. Thousands of residents around the bay suffered death and disabilities as a result. The marine environment was also greatly harmed.
