Description:
Julie, an Anglo-Indian girl, lives with her loving but alcoholic father, a controlling mother, and her younger siblings. She falls in love with her best friend’s brother, Shashi Bhattacharya, a Hindu boy, and they have a passionate encounter that results in her becoming pregnant. Shashi leaves for college unaware of the pregnancy. Her mother is devastated when Julie reveals the news, and they keep it from the rest of the family. Her mother considers an abortion but is dissuaded by a devout Christian. Julie is sent away to give birth in secret. The family is told she has found a job. Upon her return, she confesses everything to Shashi, who agrees to marry her, despite his mother's disapproval regarding the interfaith union and her secret child. Julie’s mother also opposes the marriage, as she and the rest of the family plan to move to England.
