Influenced by Yasujiro Ozu's style, he joined PCL (now Toho) in 1933, appearing in talkie films like "My Wife, Like a Rose" and "Tsuruhachi Tsurujiro," gaining recognition. Wartime restrictions and later disputes with Toho limited his film output, but he revitalized his career in 1951 with "Meshi." He subsequently produced a string of acclaimed films including "Okaasan," "Lightning," "The Couple," "Wife," "Anii Mouto," "Sounds of the Mountain," and "Bangiku." His masterpiece, "Floating Clouds," is considered by even Ozu to be a pinnacle of Japanese cinema, comparable to "The Sisters of Gion." He portrayed ordinary people in realistic depictions of everyday life, avoiding sentimentality, and consistently focused on women as his subjects.
