Description:
Paris, May 1946. Young poet Jacques Prevel encounters Antonin Artaud, the acclaimed actor, artist, and writer recently released from a mental institution. Over ten months, the film chronicles Artaud's life through his intense coaching of an actress in his radical "theatre of cruelty," and his developing relationship with Prevel, who provides him with drugs and eagerly absorbs his pronouncements. Simultaneously, Prevel navigates a life split between Jany, his young, drug-addled mistress, and Rolande, his wife, who gives birth during this period. The Left Bank becomes a crucible of cruelty, neglect, poverty, ego, madness, and the relentless pursuit of art.
