Description:
During World War II, from 1941 to 1944, the German army besieged and starved the city of Leningrad for 872 days on Hitler's orders. Over a million people died, mostly from hunger. Many survivors documented their experiences in diaries, and filmmakers captured the city's devastation. However, much of this evidence – including film recordings and especially the written accounts – was hidden after the war. The stories of those who suffered were suppressed because they didn't align with the official heroic narrative of Leningrad. Most of the surviving writings are by women who bravely shared their experiences despite fears of the enemy, the Communist Party, and Stalin's failures to provide for the city's people. This documentary, made for the 80th anniversary of the city's liberation, brings those voices to light.
