In 1913, Hamburg film director Hans Schomburgk journeyed through Germany's Togo colony with actress Meg Gehrts, filming scenes from Lomé northwards. Now, Jürgen Ellinghaus presents this footage, shot on location in modern-day Togo. Schomburgk’s film offers an unvarnished view of slave labor, humiliation, and the arrogance of colonial authority. The film contrasts these images with Gehrts’ romantic diary entries and other colonial accounts that frequently reveal a chilling indifference to the suffering.
