Cuban Roots/Bronx Stories (2000)

This documentary follows a Black Cuban family in the Bronx, exploring their complex identity shaped by major 20th-century events. They witnessed Castro's rise to power and the Bay of Pigs invasion that damaged their neighborhood. One son served in Vietnam, while a daughter protested the war. Balancing working-class and professional lives, Black and Latino heritage, and foreign and American backgrounds, the family constantly navigates who they are. After moving to Miami, they faced racial segregation. Growing up in a mixed Puerto Rican/African-American neighborhood in the Bronx, the children were pressured to choose between their Black and Spanish identities. Even their Cuban roots are layered – their grandfather was the son of Jamaican immigrants – and their connection to the Cuban Revolution is unclear.
