Description:
Young Elizabeth believed her destiny was to marry Louis XV and become Queen of France – a promise made by her father, Emperor Peter the Great of Russia. After Peter's death in 1725 without naming an heir, Russia enters a period of intense palace intrigue and power struggles. The future of the young Russian Empire and its capital, St. Petersburg, hangs in the balance. Peter's widow, Catherine I, becomes Empress, the first woman to rule Russia. She intends to honor her husband's promise to their daughter, but is unsuccessful. Louis XV refuses to marry Elizabeth after discovering she was born before her parents were officially married, deeming her illegitimate.
