A Wanderer’s Notebook, hailed as a standout late work by Yasujiro Ozu and a masterful film biography, features powerful performances from Hideko Takamine – Phillip Lopate calls it “probably her greatest” – and Kinuyo Tanaka as mother and daughter struggling to survive in 1920s Tokyo. Based on the life of novelist Fumiko Hayashi, whom Ozu frequently adapted, the film chronicles Hayashi’s difficult fight for literary acceptance in the early 20th century. It depicts her relationships with unreliable men, the various jobs she held to make ends meet (as a peddler, waitress, and barmaid), and her often humiliating efforts to get her writing published in a society dominated by men.
