Glinka: Ruslan and Lyudmila (2011)

Jurowski and Tcherniakov's production of Mikhail Glinka's "Ruslan and Lyudmila" marks the reopening of the Bolshoi Theatre's historical stage after extensive renovations. This opera, deeply connected to the Bolshoi with over 700 performances throughout its history, logically opened the 2011-2012 season. Director Dmitri Tcherniakov reimagines Glinka's work for the 21st century, utilizing the theatre’s new technology, including giant screens, to create a spectacular staging. He explores the opera's enduring relevance by highlighting the characters' emotions and placing them in contemporary situations – a "harem" for Ruslan, a Thai massage for Lyudmila.
