During the 1930s and 1940s, many groups – including Russians, Kazakhs, Germans, Ukrainians, Chechens, Crimean Tatars, and Koreans – were deemed enemies by their own government. Tens of thousands were forcibly removed from their homes and relocated to the northern Kazakhstan steppes, near Akmolinsk.
