Description:
During a private concert for a visiting king, concert pianist Montgomery Royle is deafened in a bombing meant to kill the monarch. His career destroyed, Royle returns to New York City with his sister Florence, his friend Mildred Miller, and his much younger fiancée, Grace Blair. After a suicide attempt, Montgomery discovers he can lip-read. He spends his days watching people in Central Park from his apartment, intervening anonymously in their lives and becoming increasingly consumed by the power he feels in "playing God."
