15000000 Parachutes (2001)

"15,000,000 Parachutes" is set in Jakarta, Indonesia, where approximately sixty percent of the city's 15 million residents were unemployed during filming. Diaz Morales' video uses the story of a man, a "parachutist," as an allegory for the struggles of unemployment. The narrative repeats itself each day, mirroring the repetitive life of someone searching for work. Every morning, the voiceover describes the parachutist’s routine: washing his face with bathwater because the tap doesn't work, and then gathering the courage to "attempt another jump." These jumps are performed from Monas, Jakarta's national monument – a gold-flame topped obelisk built in the 1960s and 70s to represent Indonesia’s independence.
