Description:
This is a story largely erased from history. In the 1960s and 70s, the British government, working with American officials, orchestrated the forced removal of the entire population of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean. The goal was to transfer the main island, Diego Garcia, to the U.S. for a key military base. Since then, U.S. planes based on Diego Garcia have been used to bomb Afghanistan and Iraq. The story is told by islanders who were displaced to the slums of Mauritius, and by British officials who documented the events, which the International Criminal Court now labels "a crime against humanity."
