Inspired by a 1855 photograph, this film presents a surreal nightmare using early cinema's magic tricks for unsettling effect. It offers a uniquely creepy and beautiful experience, diverging from typical modern horror. Countess di Castiglione, a celebrated Italian courtesan known for her beauty and connections to the powerful, commissioned Pierre-Louis Pierson to create 700 photographs recreating key moments of her life. Robert de Montesquiou, a Symbolist poet and art collector, became captivated by the Countess and dedicated thirteen years to writing a biography, *La Divine Comtesse*, published in 1913. Following her death, he assembled 433 of her photographs, which later became part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.
