Rick James was a hugely influential black musician, a singer, songwriter, and producer who revitalized Motown Records in the late 1970s with his funky music. His unique Punk Funk sound transformed the label's style and defined its sound through the mid-1980s. By 1981, James was a major success with his platinum album *Street Songs* and hit singles like "Super Freak" and "Give It to Me Baby." The following year, Rick James & the Stone City Band performed in Essen, Germany, opening the Rockpalast Festival for the first time. This marked James's debut performance in Europe, introducing his American Punk Funk to a new audience, and he delivered a memorable show with his signature sound and energetic stage presence.
