In the early hours of August 2nd, 1990, the world learned that Iraq had invaded Kuwait, with hundreds of Iraqi troops and tanks crossing the desert border. The United States responded swiftly, launching air strikes against Baghdad on January 17th, 1991, marking the start of Operation Desert Storm. Within three days, allied forces gained control of Iraqi airspace. Six days after the invasion, President Bush announced the deployment of 100,000 troops to the Persian Gulf.
