Her decades-long career challenged conventions. In 1935, she was the first journalist to reach the Soviet Arctic. She later traveled to Alaska with the Roosevelt administration in 1942, helped Holocaust refugees immigrate to the U.S. in 1944, reported on the Nuremberg trials in 1946, and documented the Haganah ship Exodus in 1947.
