In rural Henan province during the Mao era, Li Zhihua, a respected doctor, achieves renown for developing an affordable herbal treatment that successfully combats a widespread polio outbreak. However, his medical expertise proves powerless against the political turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, nor can it alleviate the suffering of the growing number of desperately poor patients seeking his care.
