Songbirds (2005)

The film centers on Gudny, a spirited ninety-three-year-old resident of the Hrafnista nursing home in Iceland. She shares stories of her pet rat from eastern Iceland, enjoys painting and singing in the choir, and is determined to stage a theatrical performance, taking on the lead role. We also meet Sigurdur Olafsson, who believes he's in Paradise, and Klara Tryggvason, whose connections to family are primarily through mail and phone calls as most of her children live abroad. Leifur Eiriksson is featured, where making his bed is a daily exercise. Though Gudny's knowledge is limited to the Lord's Prayer and Bible stories, she possesses a gift for storytelling and an undeniable wisdom. She questions the avoidance of discussing death, recalling her grandchildren's inquiries about her fate and confidently affirming her belief in being with God.
