Description:
In 1876, the Ashtabula train disaster was the deadliest of the 19th century, killing 97 people. A blizzard struck as the luxurious "Pacific Express #5" traveled over a bridge that had stood for over a decade, causing it to collapse and plunge 70 feet into a river gorge. The national tragedy, largely forgotten by history, is intertwined with the unsolved murder of Charles Collins, the railroad's chief engineer, and the subsequent suicide of Amasa Stone, the railroad's president and the bridge's designer.
