According to 72-year-old butoh master Akaji Maro, many people assume butoh is performed by dancers painted white. However, when his company debuted their program "Crazy Camel" in France with a gold-powdered appearance, audiences and experts believed they were introducing a new style. In reality, this flamboyant performance style using gold powder has been a cabaret-influenced variation of traditional butoh since the genre's beginnings in 1959. It was created by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, two of butoh's founders.
