Description:
Set the day before the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, this film, adapted from a story by Mitsukaru Inoue, portrays the everyday lives of its people. It explores the human stories of joy and sorrow experienced by those living with hopes for the future – a newlywed couple, an expectant mother, and lovers facing a painful farewell as one is drafted into the army. Their dreams are abruptly shattered, their lives cut short. Knowing the historical outcome deepens the emotional resonance, amplified by Teizo Matsumura's moving score. 'Ashita' is the first installment in Kazuo Kuroki's 'War Requiem Trilogy,' alongside 'Utsukushii Natsu Kirishima' (2002) and 'Chichi to Kuraseba' (2004).
