Description:
Each year, the War Cemetery Memorial in Wahala, Togo, West Africa, holds a Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11th to honor the African colonial soldiers who died there in August 1914. But Wahala's history and its name recall an earlier, painful period. In 1903, the German colonial authorities established a "correctional settlement" near the Chra River, forcing those deemed threats to colonial rule to reside there. Wahala: a place where the past echoes in the present.
