Simeiz is a small village on Crimea's southern coast that Russia currently occupies. During the Soviet era, an underground gay resort developed there, beginning with a nudist beach and later gaining a popular bar and nightclub called Hedgehogs in independent Ukraine. From the 1990s, Simeiz became a major gathering place for LGBTQ+ individuals from Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. Roughly 4,000 people visited annually before Russia's temporary occupation of Crimea in 2014. Now, Simeiz's status as a gay resort is at risk of disappearing due to homophobic laws in the Russian Federation. If it vanishes, only old photos and videos will remain to prove it ever existed.
