Description:
Between the late 1950s and the 1970s, over 90,000 ethnic Koreans in Japan emigrated to North Korea seeking opportunity, fairness, and an escape from discrimination. KAZOKU NO KUNI follows one of them during a brief return visit. After 25 years, Sonho reunites with his family in Tokyo for surgery. The film centers on his younger sister Rie, who is portrayed as the director’s own persona. Director Yang Yonghi previously documented her personal experience – witnessing her three older brothers leave for Pyongyang at age six – in her documentaries DEAR PYONGYANG and SONA, THE OTHER MYSELF.
