Freelance reporter Scoop Machida investigates a prostitution ring known as the Black Line and is then wrongly accused of murdering a young woman. While trying to prove his innocence, the journalist becomes increasingly entangled in the Black Line’s world of drugs, prostitution, and murder. He finds an unlikely ally in Maya, a sharp female gambler who knows the city's underbelly. Ishii’s Black Line, the most film noir-like of the Line series, features classic crime film elements, stark black and white cinematography by Jûgyô Yoshida, a jazzy score by Michiaki Watanabe, and a gritty screenplay by Ishii and Ichirô Miyagawa.
