Description:
Fresh from the triumph of his first play, "The Robbers," the young Friedrich Schiller deserts the Duke's army to begin his life as a poet. He finds initial welcome at the Mannheim Court and National Theatre, but his new play, "Fiesko," is rejected by the influential artistic director Dalberg. Schiller then encounters a formidable rival in the popular actor and writer August Wilhelm Iffland, competing for the role of the theatre's playwright and the affections of a woman. Increasingly desperate – penniless, hungry, and ill – Schiller continues to work tirelessly toward recognition and success, neglecting his own well-being.
