Shady Grove is the largest of four campgrounds in Dorchester County, South Carolina. Established in 1870 by formerly enslaved people, it originated from antebellum camp meetings that drew people from afar for religious gatherings led by traveling preachers. For African Americans, Shady Grove offered a rare space for community and a feeling of liberation.
