Mutiny: Asians Storm British Music (2003)

Over seven years, filmmaker Vivek Bald captures the story of the Asian Underground movement in 1990s English rock. The film blends interviews with key artists – including Talvin Singh, Fun-Da-Mental, Cornershop, Joi, and Asian Dub Foundation – with performance footage. Almost all the musicians discuss facing anti-Asian racism during their childhoods. Bald explores how this led them to incorporate reggae and hip-hop alongside Indian musical traditions like Bollywood soundtracks, bhangra, and classical music. While some artists feel disillusioned by fleeting attention from the media and record labels, others remain determined and optimistic.
