Ton Steine Scherben: Land in Sicht (2002)

Though Die Ton Steine Scherben disbanded in 1985, their impact on German music remains significant. "Land in Sicht" features a concert recording alongside a lengthy interview with the late Scherben singer Rio Reiser and various extras that highlight the band's unique importance. The live recordings from May 30, 1983, at the Offenbach Stadthalle aren't flawless—the stage lighting is often dim, and the sound has minor fluctuations—but these imperfections only enhance the film's authenticity and charm. Rio Reiser delivers a powerfully emotional performance, and his bandmates demonstrate that Scherben was always more than just a group known for campfire protest songs. They rock hard, groove deeply, and their original, complex arrangements stand far apart from the clichés of punk, German rock, and NDW.
