Description:
In a Shanghai apartment, Mr. Hou, a Nationalist official, prepares to relocate to Taiwan as the Civil War nears its end. His wife demands that the other tenants leave, as Mr. Hou intends to sell the flat, which he claims ownership of. Conversations reveal Mr. Hou’s past as a collaborator with the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese War and his forceful takeover of the apartment from the previous owner, Mr. Kong. Initially united, the tenants – including Mr. Kong, Mrs. Xiao, Little Broadcast (also known as Mr. Xiao), and a schoolteacher, Mr. Hua, and his wife – are forced to seek alternative solutions. Mr. Hua tries to secure lodging at the KMT-run school where he teaches. Little Broadcast and Mrs. Xiao invest in the black market gold trade. As tensions rise, Mr. Hua is arrested by KMT agents, and his young daughter becomes seriously ill.
