Description:
David Charleston, a former celebrated journalist, now lives in solitude, tending the Thunder Rock lighthouse on Lake Michigan. He doesn’t collect his wages and has minimal contact, only a monthly inspection. Alone, he converses with the ghosts of those lost when a 19th-century packet ship sank with approximately 60 people aboard. He relives their lives, exploring their struggles, anxieties, and aspirations. These imagined dialogues bring back memories of his own futile attempts in the 1930s to warn editors and the public about the rise of fascism and the looming threat of war, warnings largely ignored. One passenger recounts her quest for independence in a male-dominated society, while another details his exile for unorthodox medical practices. Though disillusioned with life, David finds renewed hope in these spectral encounters.
