"A Couple" explores the enduring relationship between Leo Tolstoy and his wife, Sophia, spanning 36 years and encompassing thirteen children, nine of whom lived to adulthood. Though sharing a home, they maintained frequent written correspondence, with Tolstoy insisting on reading their private diaries aloud at dinner parties. Their marriage was marked by frequent arguments and unhappiness, punctuated by moments of passionate reconciliation. The film is Sophia's account of their life together, drawing loosely from their letters and diary entries, capturing both the joys and difficulties of their shared existence.
