Manhã Submersa (1980)

In 19th-century rural Portugal, Estefânia, a strict Catholic matriarch, takes an interest in two servants striving to support their son, António. Determined to mold his future according to her faith, she uses her power to arrange his entry into the priesthood. António accepts this destiny out of respect for his family, not out of religious conviction, and leaves behind a life of poverty for the demanding world of a seminary. As he becomes more immersed in religious life, he grapples with inner conflict and doubts about his chosen path and the reasons behind it.
