Description:
Commissioner Maigret and Lieutenant Janvier are called to the Quai d’Orsay where Mademoiselle Larrieu is distraught. She discovered the body of Mr. Berthier-Lagès, a former ambassador she had worked for, riddled with bullets. Examining his apartment, Maigret and Janvier find hundreds of letters revealing a fifty-year love correspondence with a Princess of Vuynes; her husband recently died. Questioning family members and noting Mademoiselle Larrieu’s evasiveness, Maigret's assumptions are repeatedly challenged – until the truth unexpectedly becomes clear.
