During the 1970s, Houston experienced economic growth, but its professional football team struggled. The Oilers took a chance by hiring Bum Phillips, an unconventional coach from East Texas known for his cowboy attire and down-to-earth sayings. He challenged traditional methods, fostering a family-like environment and assembling a team of outsiders to achieve victory. Under Bum's leadership, the Oilers became the popular "Luv Ya Blue!" team, challenging the dominant Pittsburgh Steelers led by Earl Campbell. Bum’s success, his genuine character, and distinctive coaching style created a lasting impact, influencing generations of coaches, including his son Wade and grandson Wes Phillips.
