Life on the Mississippi (1980)

In mid-19th century Mississippi River country, piloting riverboats represented a powerful dream for many young men. Sam, a spirited teenager, catches the eye of veteran pilot Horace Bixby with his determination. Bixby agrees to take Sam on as an apprentice aboard the steamboat "Paul Jones." While learning from Bixby, Sam entertains those around him with lively stories – from onlookers on the riverbank to fellow pilots and passengers. A challenge emerges when Bixby departs for a meeting, leaving Sam under the care of Captain Brown, who harbors a grudge against him. During this difficult but crucial time, Sam’s passion and strength are tested as he learns the intricacies of riverboat life and strives to become a skilled pilot.
