Description:
1918. The end of World War I signals the decline of Vienna, the center of Central Europe, and the crumbling Austro-Hungarian Empire. On October 31st, Egon Schiele dies in his bed, a victim of the Spanish flu – one of the 20 million deaths it caused. He is 28 years old, and in his final moments, he confronts death by painting it, the only way he knows how. Just months before, his work was celebrated in his first major exhibition at the Secession building: 19 oil paintings and 29 drawings, showcasing a new vision of art that captured humanity's restlessness and desires. His mentor and friend, Gustav Klimt, had passed away earlier that year. Klimt had revolutionized art from the turn of the century and founded the Secession movement.
