Ivan the Terrible, Part I (1944)

Early in his reign, Tsar Ivan IV of Russia struggles to unite his divided country, facing betrayal from within. As the nobility and those closest to him scheme against him, the young ruler must navigate a complex web of conspiracies to guide his people toward a better future. Sergei Eisenstein's final film was meant to be the first of a three-part biopic about Ivan the Terrible. The project encountered many difficulties, including Eisenstein's experimental filmmaking and strict Soviet censorship. He completed the first part before his death, creating a powerful depiction of power, loyalty, and betrayal in 16th-century Russia. The second part of the biopic was later finished but remained hidden for over ten years due to changes in the USSR government. The third part was never completed, leaving audiences with an incomplete but compelling look at one of history's most mysterious rulers.
