Hard to Be a God (1990)

In a medieval world on a distant planet, an Earthling from the Institute of Experimental History goes undercover as Don Rumata of Estor. Arriving in the vibrant city of Arkanar to connect with a fellow institute member, he faces tragedy when that contact is killed during a palace coup. Suddenly in a role he never anticipated, Rumata must navigate the dangerous world of medieval society, marked by peasant uprisings and harsh punishments.
