Description:

In Amsterdam, we meet Ciske, an 11-year-old boy who wins us over despite his playful naughtiness. The title "Ciske the Rat" suggests his endearing yet rebellious spirit as he deals with a complicated world. Though he acts out, like dumping ink on his teacher, Ciske shows great kindness when a boy with polio joins his class. Defending the new student makes him a target for his classmates. Ciske's home life is difficult. His mother works late at a bar, and Ciske helps her, longing for an easier life. His father is away at sea, adding to their financial problems, leading his mother to earn extra money through prostitution. Beneath it all, Ciske is angry and frustrated by life's unfairness, searching for stability amidst the turmoil. His story is a moving look at lost innocence and the strength of the human spirit in the face of hardship.
