Botchan (1980)

This adaptation of Natsume Soseki’s 1906 novel tells the story of Botchan, a recent graduate starting his first teaching job at a rural Japanese school. Unprepared for mischievous students and dishonest landlords selling fake antiques, Botchan struggles to adjust. A fishing trip with his only friend, Hotta, offers a brief respite, but his troubles worsen as he begins to suspect Hotta is behind his problems. As Botchan becomes entangled in a complicated plot involving students and teachers, he questions everyone's loyalty. The lack of consequences for student disrespect fuels his suspicion. However, the person Botchan accuses of being the culprit turns out to be his defender, revealing a shocking truth about the school’s dean. Armed with evidence against the dean, Botchan and Hotta must work together to expose corruption within the school, navigating hidden agendas and political maneuvering.
