The animation and score is some of Ghibli’s best. The story is definitely simpler than most Ghibli movies, but that’s fine. Not all Ghibli movies need to be super deep and complex. There is only one way to score this film and that is based off of the lead guy. He sucks so bad. They cut between a waterfall bathing session and his car and him and then the waterfall and then him and it's repulsive. I once read this book and the last bit was "and then black Harry Bosch totally banged the hot young woman who had been helping him on the case real good. Reeeeaaaaaal good." There are plenty of stories of slaves in the USA, but this is the only one I’ve come across where a free citizen is kidnapped and sold into slavery. It’s this latter-day people trafficking that sees successful family man Solomon Northup (Chiwitel Ejiofor) fall foul of some villains, beaten savagely, then sold to work in the sugar plantations of Louisiana. I'm not one to write reviews, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The writing had a fresh feel to it, the acting was superb, and the twists and turns just kept going. All I could think is that this feels like a Sergio Leone production, in that it just kept going. While Leo DiCaprio was amazing as always (while slowly turning into Jack Nicholson), and newcomer Chase Infinity gave a solid performance, I would say that Sean Penn stole the show. Filming a dark comedy about an inherently controversial subject is an exceedingly risky moviemaking proposition. If it works, the payoff can be huge. But, if it falls flat, the project not only fails financially and artistically, but it can devastate a filmmaker’s reputation, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of viewers, critics and possible prospective backers of future productions.
